Map suggestion for the rtv server

Postby Sm0k3 on Thu Jan 14, 2010 1:58 am

There was a map that a few of us old timers tested probably a year ago. It's called ins_shulah, I don't know if there is an imc file for it, but I could make one if needed. It was a badass map and when we got it going most of the people in there, didn't even bother with the cap points, it became an all out deathmatch mulch.
And of course I have said this before, but let's forego the "stock" maps and throw a couple customs on there, including the new version of sinjar I did, trenches, dust, and office. Hell what can it hurt, the server is sitting empty the majority of the time anyway?

i'm gonna have to say no to this.. simply for one reason

no one.. and I mean NO ONE outside of very few members have even TRIED to populate the RTV server. Why should we put up maps that no one knows about when no one plays with the stock maps? Not to mention.. when speaking of an RTV server.. maps that are well known receive the most votes.. period.

Why do we constantly have nades waste his time putting up extra servers if we aren't going to use them?

And smoke.. i don't mean to piss in your wheaties pal.. but you're the only one calling for custom maps

The RTV server issue has been on my mind since I first thought in applying for NADES (a little before I got banned to be more accurate). Now that I'm a member I really want to take part in solving this issue.

A couple nights ago Smoke invited me to the RTV server along another members, admins and regulars and we managed to keep the server with about 14 people for a couple hours (I had to get out because it was 7:00 AM here). Last night we tried that again but it didn't work. So me and Smoke took the oportunity to discuss the problem. He told me exactly what he posted here and I realy don't know if custom maps are the answer. I respect Smoke's opinion and I too would like to play custom maps from time to time but I don't think the RTV server is the place for it.

I remember the nights when Stag and I would get on the RTV, him being shitfaced, and invite people to it and play. It would only get populated when our members played on it.

I think the problem with the RTV server is that there are no established rules for the maps, the way we have for Sinjar. Yes, we have the standard "No spawnkilling, no intentional TK" rules, but that's about it. People like the Sinjar server because the map specific rules keep the asshattery in check, and keeps the action intense.

Sinjar is hard enough to admin, with a pretty well laid out set of rules. With no map specific rules, there will be endless debates about what is and is not a no go zone, etc., both between admins and players, as well as the admins themselves that have to more or less make it up as they go along. The reason I come to the Nades server is that I wanted to avoid all the crap that goes on elsewhere.

I think if you want to see the server popluated, pick a second map that is not Sinjar (one of the popular ones), draft up the rules, and then stick to that one map for a while. Eventually, maybe add another map, once the first map seems to be doing well.

Just my $0.02.

Mechanik, I appreciate the $.02 (if i keep collecting from you guys I'll end up with a free GPU )

Anyway.. Sinjar is the only map that needs those kinds of rule sets.. Most of the other maps (even buhriz) are more linear and don't need as much policing. Then there's maps like.. samawah, haditha, hillah, that have static spawns... then there's baghdad.. which spawns you two objectives back..

Basically what i'm saying is.. I'd thought this over and council discussed it way back when RTV was set up. There's no need for the massive rule making for ALL the maps. Simply because sinjar is the biggest problem with "go" and "no-go" areas.

There's only 2 other maps in this whole game that MAY have "grey" areas. Buhriz.. and Almaden.. BUT.. even with that.. we ran them on stand alone before. It's alot easier with them than you think. Add spawn protect with it and believe me.. you won't need rulesets for each map :)

The common sense approach works great on most if not all of the other maps.
No spawncamping..
No Tking
No hacks
No mic/chat spam
No Racism (language or tags)

Then there's this lil nugget.. do you guys REALLY want to sit and read 15 pages of posts with pretty maps?? I know I don't. I also don't want to have to go through having nice ones made.. like we have for sinjar. Also I couldn't remember it all, so i'm not expecting many would, and having to tab out to "check the map" is ridiculous..

The best suggestion I can offer.. is when you're playing on RTV.. and a map comes up that you are unfamiliar with.. play a round on each team. It will show you spawn points. And as for spawncamping goes.. most of the other maps have 3 and 4 ways out of each spawn.. so unless they're lying IN spawn.. it's not as big of a problem. Use..."common sense" rules.

Again sinjar was ONLY done this way because of Piss Poor Planning on the Devs part. The other big reason for the ruleset on sinjar was.. a total miscommunication of any of the rules.. so we set out to make it concrete and easy.

I think Mechanic is right that it would get populated if it was a static server with no map rotation but I'm not sure as to what "the Don" wants to do with it. Total waste of a server tho, never mind NADES's money

Custom maps are a proven failure. Why do we want to waste resources trying to bring them back?
